Shakedown Day and first Sunday on base

Happy Sunday! It is SO beautiful here. And hot and humid, but I love the sun! First off – I am sleeping really well so far. It’s only been two nights, but it’s been the best two nights of sleep I’ve gotten in a while! It’s almost been like vacation with strangers the last two days. Which is going to make the shift back into Army life kind of rough today! Let’s hope it’s an easy transition šŸ™‚

I was able to get a four mile run in with some Army boys today. We ran to the beach, which is about half a mile away, at a 8:21 pace, and then we ran the streets around our buildings. The water was so pretty and blue!

After I showered, Sondelski, Rhody, and I met up with others at the DFAC (or the Galley, if you’re Navy), and I saw another sign for my birthday party the base is throwing for me. So sweet and thoughtful of them! Even though we’ll be at a water park in our OCPs (uniform)…

Off to the School of Music (SOM from now on!) for an hour. I’m letting Sondeslki borrow my horn until she gets issued one tomorrow, and she’s letting me use her music. In a future post, after a few weeks, I’ll write about what I wish I knew before I got here. For instance, the SOM issues you a horn, so I didn’t need to fly with my personal one. However, if I didn’t bring my own horn with me, I’d have nothing to practice on this weekend because I arrived too late on Friday. I also didn’t bring any music, and I totally should have. Apparently the music library is awesome, but they’re closed on weekends. Tomorrow it is!

While I was in the SOM bathroom, I realized that I forgot to share my latest injury. Will and I biked everywhere in Chicago, and it was awesome! These Divvy bike stations were all over the place.

BUT. We went on an actual walking and biking path, but it was not well-maintained. My water bottle started to fall off the front of the bike, so I tried to save it. In the process, I fell instead. Into a bench first, and then on to the ground. I don’t know why I just didn’t put my feet down on the ground… FAIL.

After we practiced, we went to the 10:30 church service, but we needed to leave at 11:15 to make sure we ate and still had enough time to get back to the barracks at 1200. The little bit of the sermon that we were able to hear was really good, and I’m glad I have the notes of the bulletin, at least. There’s a “coffee house” discussion at 1800, so Sondelski and I are going to go to that. I’m hoping that the pastor will send me his sermon notes so I can download the rest of it. The sermon series was on Galations 5:22, the fruits of the Spirit. The sermon today was on patience! One of my favorite fruits of the spirit to work on šŸ™‚ as everyone who knows me also knows.

Shakedown is at 1400, so I unpacked and repacked all of my Army-issued gear to make sure I had it all. If I’m missing something, it’s a little late at this point, but still! Turns out, I have everything we need and it’s all folded to Army standards now anyway.

There are rumors that we might get “smoked” if people don’t have all their clothing or if they forget to bring all their personal belongings down to the shakedown, so we’ll just have to wait and see! I’ll keep you posted šŸ™‚ The Army summer officially starts today! I can’t wait to have more information about the cycle in general and the daily schedule. I thrive on routine, which isn’t alwayyyyyyyys the best way to live, but that’s why I have Will in my life. He’ll make me more spontaneous!

Today’s verses of the day comes from the Bible reading at church, Psalm 37:1-11:
Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong; for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away. Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun. Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret – it leads only to evil. For those who are evil will be destroyed, but those who hope in the LORD will inherit the land. A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found. But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity.

Question for you!
Did anyone else go to church today? If so, what about today’s message stood out to you?
– I need to learn how to be still and really listen to God’s voice. Too often, I get caught up in the mundane, little piddly things in my life, and it’s just clutter in the way of peace and stillness. I just need to trust God and model my life after Jesus, not compare myself to others or worry about what they’re doing or why they’re doing it. It’s not my business. God has His own timeline for my life and for their lives and He knows what He’s doing!
