MPTs, Concert Band, and it is my birthday. Woot woot!

Well, to celebrate my birthday, the platoon sergeants let us go at 1330 instead of 1630! Just kidding. We did get out early, but it’s because the housing computer system was down. We found out what MPT (music performing team) we’d be playing in this cycle, and we were supposed to move into new rooms with a new roommate. But since the system was down and that’s what was scheduled for this afternoon, we’re free!! Happy birthday, indeed!

But we did have to pack up our room last night…

Ehh I’m just going to live out of my duffel bags until we move again. We might move tomorrow! I think I’m rooming with Rhody, because we’re in the same MPT, but I guess I find out soon enough! In the meantime, Rhody, Sondelski, and I will continue to be battle buddies :):)

Oh by the way, here’s a picture of breakfast – green smoothie, what? Orange, grapefruit, dates, peanut butter. I also made an iced coffee with chocolate soymilk – so good1

I’ve had an amazing past two days here! We had our first rehearsal, Concert Band, yesterday, and it was sooo much fun. I did not realize how much I missed playing my horn! I keep being reminded of that! We read through our concert program, and I’ll put some of the pieces on the blog over the next week or so. It’s a mix of concert band literature, jazz pieces, patriotic pieces, and marches. Some of the horn parts are KILLER. Hello, high C! I didn’t hit that one, but I hit the high B-flat after it 🙂

And MAN oh man, there was an absolutely amazing staff recital today. The cadre here at the Army SOM are phenomenal players. The purpose of MPTs is to entertain, entertain, entertain, and you’ve got to play to your audience. Your audience is different at almost every gig, so MPTs have to be versatile and play a variety of repertoire (National Standard No 2 HAHA). We had a class today on all the aspects of performing in an MPT. MPTs can be many different ensembles – a jazz band, a big band, a pop band, a woodwind ensemble, a brass ensemble, really whatever players you have! Our class is pretty small, so we have some creative instrumentation in these ensembles.

I really wanted to be in the brass sextet, but I’m in one of the woodwind ensembles instead. It’s three clarinets, two saxophones, and me, a horn. I was bummed for a bit, but then Carmen told me that he’s a pretty awesome arranger and we brainstormed some pieces we could use! Actually, he just told me that he wrote a textbook on arranging that they use at the college where he teaches, that’s all… Umm, that’s insane. We still need to talk with our professor, but we’re thinking of arranging an Eric Whitacre piece, some Dixieland, Danny Boy, Make our Garden Grow (Canadian Brass)… I’m pumped!

Sondelski and I went to the gym to do some kickboxing. This room is always available and we can borrow gloves there! It’s not the most up-to-date gym, but they really do have everything you need!

More on the kickboxing in the next post. I wanted to separate the posts, just in case not everyone is interested in some personal struggles I feel like I need to share so they’re not weighing me down. I’ve listened to Nic Antoinette’s podcast, Real Talk Radio, for a few seasons, and I subscribe to her Friday email, too (highly recommend her!). Today, she wrote about how she’s kept this one secret for years and years and years and how it had this stupid power over her. Secrets do have a hold on you. There’s a weight to them, and they’re stories that you tell yourself about yourself. But I want to give this up and get it out there “publicly,” even though I’m sure it’s been obvious for a while now. I need to get over it, stop pretending it’s not real, and let God lead me on the path of who I really am in His eyes.

Happy weekend, everyone!

Verse of the Day:
Luke 6:38
– “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

God gives us so much mercy, and we are supposed to be just as merciful to others. I’m humbled by how much He forgives me and loves me!
