Extra sleep is soooo nice and weekend shenanigans

‘Check out those high-speeders from early this morning! We ate breakfast in our rooms, so we got to schoolhouse around 0800. That way, we could put in two hours of practicing before church 🙂 We went to chow, and then we swung by the schoolhouse for another half hour of practicing before the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie! I haven’t seen very many of the Pirate movies, so I thought this one was awesome! We’re so lucky that they have free showings on Sundays at 1300. We sat up in the balcony, and we were the only ones up there 🙂

Last night, a bunch of us went to the library to read, return DVDs, and play some ping pong. The library is open pretty late, and it’s nice to have a quiet place to unwind.

I’ve heard really good things about these books – I want to check theme out when I get home! (Sorry about the language)

Chaplain Pederson, the navy pastor for our church, has been on leave for the past two weeks. The chaplain who’s been filling in has delivered two “interesting” sermons. Today’s sermon was based on Matthew 11:16-19 and 25-30. The pastor said that the church is bound by Jesus, not by males, females, race, or temporal powers of state. It’s based on a faith that is ground in love for all of God’s people without regard to race or politics. I can get behind that. He also pulled statistics from a survey taken about how Millennials view the church. Apparently, these were the top five answers: 1) the church is hypocritical 2) the church is anti-homosexual 3) the church is insincere 4) the church is sheltered / out of touch with reality 5) the church is too political (too right-wing). The moral of his sermon was to love people and care for them as Jesus did. He was very impassioned… He paraphrased from Dietrich Bonhoeffer: “Religious men must live in a godless world, in a secular world. We don’t need to be any religious sort of way, but we just need be men with God within us.” We need to be the hands and feet and heart of Christ. “Make Jesus great again” were his closing words.

I mean, it’s not that it was necessarily a bad message, but it wasn’t delivered very effectively. I really relate to pastors and sermons who teach out of Scripture. I do believe that incarnational evangelism is the way to go – being the hands and feet and heart of Christ. I try to show that every day. I don’t always do it, but it is on my mind. With practice comes more practice 🙂

Speaking of practice, DoTerra’s peppermint oil has been super helpful with my horn playing! First of all, it’s just great to put it on the back of my neck when I get into a practice room – it’s so hot here! And then it focuses my attention for my practice session. Lifesaver!

I’ve been going to bed around 8 pm the last week or so… or at least, that’s my intention. Sometimes it’s 8:30, but still, I’ve been trying to go to sleep earlier. I was sleeping so horribly for the last few weeks, but this week has been amazing! I’ve gotten at least 7 hours of sleep every night, and I feel so much better. Especially since my body is definitely gaining weight and going into recovery mode, I just need the rest. Rhody has been really quiet when she comes back to the barracks, so I don’t even hear her most of the time. I’m going to continue to be lame and go to bed early – Grandma alert!

Tomorrow is an early day and a long duty day! So I’m going to put my laundry away as I watch Lone Survivor. I’ve wanted to watch it ever since I read the book. The book is phenomenal! I hope everyone enjoyed their sunny weekend and I can’t believe that it’s almost the middle of July! Almost halfway through the cycle. I can’t wait to be home. I miss everyone and I want to snuggle up with Maggie!

Verse of the Day:
Proverbs 16:3
– Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.
